Helping H.A.N.D.S. Preschool
PHILOSOPHY/STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
HELPING H.A.N.D.S.
Southbridge Public Preschool Program, Helping H.A.N.D.S. Provides a safe and nurturing environment for young children that foster self-esteem, cooperation, socialization, positive values, and love for learning. The developmental program offers an educational experience that encompasses the many cultures and languages of our community, as well as acknowledging the diversity of the community at large. The program welcomes preschool children who live in Southbridge regardless of race, sex, religion, ethnic group, or economic status.

Each child in the classroom feels included, and an appreciation of the global community is fostered as children learn to respect each other’s similarities and differences. Children are thus empowered to develop a positive self-identity and to develop empathy toward others.

Children of diverse abilities work collaboratively. Each child is a valued contributor. There is an emphasis on delivering therapies within the classroom according to the child’s educational plan. The curriculum enables individuals to grow through a multisensory and stimulating environment where everyone in an integrated setting succeeds.

The classroom has designated learning centers. Children make choices among the centers, classroom activities, and materials in a thematically integrated setting. Materials stimulate creativity, and foster skill development. Children are introduced to real objects, and educational experiences. The teacher is a resource who guides, facilitates, attends to, and nurtures each child’s needs and interests.

Parent involvement is an integral part of the Preschool experience. Parents, as their child’s first teacher, become partners in education. The parent-child bond is strengthened through parents helping in the classroom, and workshop activities for parents and child. Parents and teachers work together to promote the growth and development of each child beginning with the home visit.
